He and his grandmother try to foil the witches' plans. Seductive, nice, amusing. spells, a touching grandmother, a boy in special detective mission, delicate triumph of good guy and right special effects. Angelica Huston makes one of her best roles and entire atmosphere is full of Christmas flavor. axis - wise grandmother and her war against witches. so, pieces of a fairy tale. charming, warm, easy, with perfect tension moments and softy end. an adventure like childhood games. and a different Rowan Atkins. in fact, lights, masks, metamorphose and a brave heart who stopped a catastrophe in United Kingdom. and, the big secret - it is not only for children but a pretty lesson for each parent. because witches are not only fairy tales characters but, in same measure, shadows of reality.
Snakes are being used as a recurring image throughout; snakes eat mice. 0. o. I watched this for the first time and finished this not that long ago (Donald Sutherland one) and it was fantastic. I loved the first one too. So eerie and spooky, suspenseful and dread inducing. These movies that play on the mind and use suspense iver gore and violence are my favorite ones. But, most of all, this is very entertaining, with a powerhouse performance by Anjelica Huston. Great stuff.

I haven't seen or read The Witches so I can't comment on that sadly : D The second book in A Series of Unfortunate Events really disturbed me when I read it in 6th grade, even more so now that I'm an adult and reread the first book which painted this scene in an even creepier light. There's this scene where Count Olaf in disguise sits with the children and their guardian at the dinner table and he has a knife in his hand under the table and keeps rubbing it (I believe the wording was Gently sawing it against her leg but it's been a while) against Violet's leg. It really disturbed me because it rang a lot of alarm bells in my head but I couldn't understand /why/ until over a decade later. I remember it bothering me so much that it haunted me, like the image of it happening would drift in when I was doing school work even in high school (and post-graduation as well. I hope you feel better soon, man.

Roald Dahl's The Witches is a book for kids which is funny, exciting, fast moving, and scary. Nicolas Roeg's film adaptation captures these elements very well. It is NOT a film for timid children - there are some elements in it which are amusingly grotesque if you are adult, but which might give some children nightmares.
